I'm going to the World Series...sort of.
I don't have tickets.
I'm not planning to get tickets.
But I *am* going to Fenway Park tomorrow for Game 1 of the World Series.
The beauty of Fenway (like Wrigley Field and AT&T Park) is that there are opportunities to snag baseballs outside the stadium. I've only been to Fenway three times in my life, and I've never tried to snag on the outside, but since this IS the World Series...and since my dream is to catch a World Series
home run...and since I don't have to pay for anything other than gas and tolls, I've decided to give it a shot.
I've also decided that my current streak of 494 consecutive games with at least one ball is NOT on the line. If I somehow manage to snag a ball (even during BP), then I'll count it, but if I don't even set foot inside the stadium, then I'm off the hook as far as my ball-snagging stats are concerned. In that sense, it's a win-win situation.
Anyway, the purpose of this trip is not ALL about the balls. I'm also going to visit my friend Ben (who runs this site) and his family. They live in Lexington, which is kinda like a suburb of Boston, and I'll be staying with them for one or two nights. Basically, if I have fun at Game 1, I'll stick around for an extra day and "go" to Game 2. If, however, I get bored and lonely and cold and tired and frustrated during Game 1, then screw it. I'll just drive back to NYC the next day and watch Game 2 on TV from the comfort of my own bed.
Another purpose of the trip: visiting Ben's school on Thursday morning and talking to the kids about writing books and snagging baseballs.
But back to the Series...
I'm not happy about the fact that I won't see a single pitch of Game 1, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I have a chance (as my friend Brad pointed out) to catch the first Rockies World Series home run in history. And what if Manny Ramirez goes yard and extends his career post-season home run record? How cool would it be to see THAT ball in the pocket of my glove?
I'll have a walkman with ESPN Radio blasting, so at least I'll be able to follow the action and position myself based on who's batting. For righties, I hope to be on the roof of the parking garage behind the Green Monster (see #1), and for lefties, I might jog around the corner and go for foul balls on Yawkey Way (see #2). If there's a mob on the garage, or worse, if no one's allowed to hang out there in the first place, I might play righties for foul balls as well (see #3).
I'm not going to wear any eye-catching clothing like I did for the Home Run Derby. I don't know if there'll even be cameras showing the (potential) action out on the street, and anyway, I'd rather try to blend in this time around and draw as little attention to myself as possible. But just in case you get a peek at the street and want to look for me, I'll probably be wearing a dark blue jacket on top of a gray hooded sweatshirt...and jeans...and a black ski cap.
This whole trip might be crazy--but if I do enough crazy things, eventually one of them will work...

first off, i'd like to say that i did indeed take the time to read it. secondly i'd like to warn you that it is supposed to rain all day tomorrow and tomorrow night.

only 161 days until opening days for the twins. Good thing (very bad too) I have school to pass up the time. I have Sox is 6.

TSWECHTENBERG-
I've been seeing mixed weather reports. It doesn't look great, but some of the forecasts have been saying that it'll stop raining by noon.
DB3PAR-
161? Is that all?

Good luck! It would be really cool if you caught the Rockies first WS homer and weren't even really at the game. What a story that will be. Once again good luck and I'll pray for good weather for you!

good luck man, its gunna be tough. maybe in the later innings you could get a real cheap ticket from a scalper who wants to make somethin on it at least. doubtful though. what if you got a walk off? wouldnt that be insane?
everytime a ball goes out there im gonna assume you at least came close to it. and red sox fans would probably rather watch the game, if they are a "nation" as they say. id never stand outside the stadium for homerun balls if the mets were in the world series, thats for sure. id be inside or at home.
anyway, good luck. hope you get one!

Balls can reach that parking lot during the game? In BP yeas, but the game!? If you do this, you should stand outside Yankee durnid the Derby in right. Someone (on 'roids) might be able to hit one out. I've seen alot of balls go into the last rows of the bleachers, so I think it's plausible.

AUBREY-
Thanks very much. I'll take all the "good luck"'s I can get. I have nooooo idea what to expect.
GJK2212-
Ohmygod, I can't even imagine a walk-off. Don't get my heart racing like that, and don't assume anything. I'm not sure if I'll even be allowed to stand on the garage roof. It might be closed off.
PUCK COLLECTOR-
What are you suggesting? That people can hit balls futher during BP than they can during a game? It's certainly more likely that guys would hit homers in BP, but game homers (though rare) travel just as far. There's no way that anyone will hit a homer over the white facade at Yankee Stadium, but I could see a ball sneaking through that little gap where you can see the trains rumbling past.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I'll be excited to hear how it goes. Remember to bring your glove trick because right in front of the parking garage building, there's a big gutter/ditch thing that's like ten feet deep. When I was there last year, a BP ball landed in there and I didn't have my cup-trick handy. Some lucky passerby jumped down there and had his friend pull him back up just as I was getting ready to set up. So frustrating.
Report any abuse or spam
Thanks. Yeah, I'm planning to bring the trick. Tell me...is it possible for a person to jump down there AND get back up to the sidewalk without any help? Or is it too deep?

Have fun Zack! I think you will get some balls. You are always lucky. Are you going to try to get in later in the game and will you buy any world series t-shirts?

Don't tell any Boston muggers, but I'm bringing a lot of cash with me in case I get an opportunity to buy a ticket. Most likely, though, as you said, I wouldn't get that opportunity until late(r) in the game. But who knows? If I end up staying outside the ballpark the whole time, I'm fine with that. I'm not sure what I'll buy in terms of souvenirs. In fact, I hadn't even thought of that until you mentioned it.
MARKSHARK22-
Don't worry about "tswechtenberg." He's just grumpy because his team isn't even IN the World Series. Remember, the League Division Series (first round of the playoffs) is the only series where it's best-of-five. The other two rounds are best-of-seven.
TSWECHTENBERG-
Be nice.

Zack, good luck up at Fenway! I've been to Fenway twice, and I'm amazed at how many balls are fouled back behind home plate and behind the dugouts, and they all end up going out of the stadium. It should be an interesting scene there tonight. GO SOX!

Awesome!
Take pics of EVERYTHING!! I've always wondered what it's like at the scene of a world series, especially at a place as festive as boston!
good luck Zack!

Good luck. Wish I were at Fenway instead of 3,000 miles away in Seattle. Also, as Jackie and I always say with regard to our book project, "It may sound crazy, but crazy has worked so far..." Keep at it, I'll be cheering for you (and looking for you, though you will be camouflaged.)

I wish the LCS was a best of five.... Indians, grumble grumble grumble....
grumble.
At least now I can watch the WS without freaking out on every pitch. I don't know how many times I scared the **** our of my wife and cat by yelling at the TV during game 7.
Zack, watch for people leaving the game and buy their stub off of them. People will leave, not many, but some. You will get a good memento and may be able to find a guard that is soft hearted to let you in. I've done it before, you go talk to the guards early, after BP but before the game. Basically, you tell them all about how you can't afford a ticket, $600+ for standing room on stub hub, and mention to them how it would be a dream come true if you got a stub and they let you in. It may work. You will probably heave to shave tho, won't work when we look our age.

Um, you could probably get out of the ditch on your own. Like if a ball goes down there and someone else is threatening to go down there before you'll have time to set up your glove trick, I would say jump down and deal with getting out later. I think you should be able to get out, and if not, somebody'll eventually help you.

ummmmm..no
Red Sox in 4 or 5, they will dominate the much weaker NL champ.Just cuz they have won many gamnes in a row against much weaker teams does not mean they can beat my sox. Well good luck Zack it might be a long schot though

as i said before about that walkoff...disregard, its 13-1...no walkoffs tonight...

****. If I'd read this before tonight, I could've told you that Yawkey Way is part of the park during games, so you can't get there without a ticket. Woulda been rough jogging that far back and forth anyway. And the other side of the park is WAY far away going around the park clockwise from behind left field. But you'd be better off just staying there--more balls go over the roof behind first than do go over the Monster Seats. Then again, there's that new area behind first base, plus the pavilion seats, so not a lot go over at all.... It's funny--waiting behind the Monster for a HR is my lifelong dream, and since I just moved to Boston, I have to do that--I couldn't miss a WS game to do it, though. Next year.
One of my last trips to Fenway this year, I just got to Lansdowne and a parking lot attendant was holding a ball and saying "first one I ever got..."

More GAME balls go foul toward first or third out of the park than over the Monster, that is. In batting practice, you've got a much better chance on Lansdowne.

EVERYONE-
I don't have time to answer all the comments now or write an entry about Game 1, but I will when I get back to NYC. It's too bad nothing came over the monster during the game because I was in a great spot with very little competition. I'll be back out there tonight for Game 2. And by the way, there WAS batting practice yesterday. Stay tuned...

It's me again. I just talked about my baseball collection to 50 middle-schoolers, and I now have a few minutes free before the next "event"...
PSU532-
It was a VERY interesting scene. I didn't get a chance to walk around the whole ballpark, though. I was pretty much focused on the area behind the Green Monster.
ETHAN-
Thanks! I took a bunch of pics behind the Monster, plus a few other things. I don't think I'll have enough pics to make a whole photo album, but I should have a bunch for the blog itself. Right now, all the pics are still on my camera, so I won't really know how good they are 'til I get home and look at them on my laptop.
DEIDRE-
I like that saying. I was rooting for Seattle this year. The A's had their run. The Angels are always in it. The Rangers? Snore. But the Mariners...and Ichiro?! Would've been fun.
ALEX-
You should hear my dad yell at the TV. It's the funniest thing ever. Excellent idea about buying stubs and trying to sneak in. I'll tell ya, though...I had so much fun outside the ballpark and felt I had such a great chance of catching a home run that I'm not even sure I want to go inside tonight. Too bad Wakefield won't be pitching tonight as origianlly planned. I'm sure he would've given up a few bombs.
GREG-
Thanks. I had forgotten until I saw the ditches that it's really only the first one (closest to the foul pole) that's really deep. All the others would be easy to get out of...and along those lines, I don't think I'm even gonna bother bringing my glove trick tonight. It's just one more thing to lug around.
CUBS0110-
My guess: That ain't gonna happen.
RAMONES18-
I think you're right about the Sox, and I'm not just saying that because of last night's score. They're going to de-MOL-ish the Rockies.
NICK-
Uhh...
SUSAN-
I ended up staying behind the Monster the whole night and ignoring the foul balls. That's my plan again for tonight, so root for homers.
GJK2212-
Batting practice was good. The game was dead. The whole day/night never stopped being fun.
JERE-
**** indeed. I knew that about Yawkey Way at one point, but clearly it slipped my mind. Anyway, you're right, it WAS too far to run back and forth, mainly because the streets were so crowded. In addition, there weren't two lefties hitting back-to-back in either starting lineup. I ran to the 3rd base side for Matsui in the top of the first and nearly missed Holliday by not making it back to Lansdowne Streen in time. After that, I was like, "Duh. I'm not sacrificing a home run for a highly unlikely foul ball," and I just stayed there.
TWO2067-
Yeah, I figured that's the case, but I'd rather lower my chances of getting a game ball in order for it to be a home run. That's not usually how I play it, but the World Series (with Manny!) is a different story.

cubs-how do u expect the rockies to win when the red sox have matsuzaka, lester, and if needed in games 5, 6, and 7 (which wont happen) u will get becket, schilling and matsuzaka again with becket playing the closer role in game 7. like i said the rockies MIGHT MIGHT be able to get one out of the red sox, but nothing more, the sox pitching is proving to be great and improving throughout the postseason, and the hitting pairs of pedroia/youkilis and ortiz/ramirez are just too much for the rockies to handle. im still sticking with a Sox sweep or MAYBE Sox in 5

The Red Sox won't be using anyone but J-Pap as the closer, but I think you're right about the series as a whole. I'd be amazed if it comes back to Boston.
