Shelley Duncan, pizza, sex, anti-semitism, etc.

Quick update: I caught Shelley Duncan's home run last night at Yankee Stadium. The YES Network didn't show me at all, but I was seen on FSN's broadcast...

zack_catches_duncan_homer.jpg

I don't have time to write any more about it now, but in my next entry, I'll share the full story and the actual video clip.

In other news, I was quoted today in the San Diego Union-Tribune about why it's still worth it for Padres fans to go to games despite the fact that their team sucks. (Bud Selig should hire me as an ambassador for MLB.)

And finally, in less happy news, if you need an extra reason to hate America's Team, my friend Michael Fierman (aka "tswechtenberg" for those of you who read the comments) attended one of the recent Mets games at Turner Field and told me that when Scott Schoeneweis hit Chipper Jones with a pitch, a fan nearby yelled: "Hitting Chipper Jones is a felony in the state of Georgia!!! You're gonna DIE!!! Go BACK to Jew York!!!"

Rubbing more salt into Puck Collector's wound! I thought you might have been the one to get it. Congratulations!

i see my ******* empty seat in the backround.

I knew it!! Congratulations, that's really awesome!

Congrats on the HR ball. Too bad about the fan comment here in Atlanta. One idiot seems to ruin it for everyone. Don't remember hearing much from Mets fans this week ;)

lsthrasher - chill about the atlanta thing. the mets are on a one game streak, don't jinx it haha.

zack - congrats once again fine sir.

Nice Catch, now how many home runs does that make for Shelly Duncan, 2. GO METS!!!!!
AC

Hey congrats on the catch. I got my 1st home run ball last year when the Nationals were in town, Ryan Church's. Hopefully I can get another this year. I have great outfield seats for 3 games Thursday, Fri and Sat.

oh, the 3rd comment was by puckcollector, not fatherpuck

nice zack...congrats...i was watching on up9/yes but they didnt bring the shot in close enough to see who caught it...but congrats again

and about fans in atlanta...most of them probably have never met a jew before yet alone know anything about religion...and sad to say many of them who are anti-semetic and whatnot dont even know anything about their own religion besides the fact that they get stuff on christmas

Wow, Joneli. How much research did you do before that short-sighted comment? Here's some food for thought...
http://www.shalomatlanta.org/page.html?ArticleID=121291

ok thats one example...i never said that everyone in atlanta has never met a jew before i said "most of them probably never have" and considering atlanta's population is just over 5,000,000 and if there are 77,000 jewish residents in atlanta...if we do the math: 77000/5000000=0.0154...making one and a half of every 100 residents of the metro-atlanta area jewish...and im sure many of which are very condisending towards jews

and please be aware that i never said "all of them" but instead "most of"...also since i am jewish and just so happen to teach hebrew and culture at my temple i kinda have a general idea of whats going on and since i have friends in atlanta that i talk who are jewish, anti-semitism there is higher than you would ever find in NY

I simply don't buy that MOST people have those views. On the other hand, I can't speak for the contacts you have down here. I'm sorry if they experience a lot of negativity. Truce?

its not super horrible from what ive heard but there is alot more of those sentiments there than around NY...its more or less just due to the overwhelming amounts of christianity there over judaism and just the unknowingness of some of those people

but yes absolutely truce...and i must say i did 100% completely underestimate the number of jews living in the atlanta area on first call...but i am more than happy to be further educated

are you from atlanta or that area? since you have "thrasher" in your name?

Yes, I've lived here for all of my 22 years. Grew up watching the Braves and got into hockey in 2001. Finally bought Thrashers season tickets last year, but baseball will always be #1.

Hey man! Nice catch. This is one of my favorite blogs on mlblogs.com. Check out mine.
http://theburghblues.mlblogs.com/

“I think of baseball sort of how I think about pizza and sex,” he said. “Even when it's bad it's good.”

Zack, you are now a solid #2 on my all-time baseball quotes list, right behind Pete Rose, when he said “I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball.”

Hey Zack....

Nice catch. Can't wait to see the video. Was it in right or left? TracyCollinsBecky (aka TC) who posts on here caught Adam Dunn's HR last night off of Trevor Hoffman. His first of the year. I hope to join you guys soon in this year's HR catching race.

Do you want to burn Atlanta down now like Sherman in the Civil War? Geeze. I think you're just fanning the flames by posting stuff like that on here. Who really cares what some dumb guy in Atlanta says at a ball game? He could say go back to San Diego stupid Christian and I wouldn't care and I definitely wouldn't post it on here. If your boy was so offended when he heard that he should have manned up and talked to the guy and told him to shut up. Now you have people all riled up and generalizing about people in Atlanta. I know you're Jewish and all, but I don't really care about that. I don't care where you go to church. I care about you as a baseball collector. I like to read and talk about baseball stuff. This is the second post you've brought up the anti Jew stuff and it really doesn't have anything to do about baseball or baseball collecting. If you want to bring stuff like that up maybe it should be in a different forum or a different blog. Let's just talk about baseball huh?

Also, I'd like to hear about how you managed to get a quote in our local paper here? Details? It was cool to read that this morning. The Padres still suck by the way.

Leigh

the catch was in left,

lsthrasher04-

ah i do love atlanta the one time i was there for like 2 days...we were offered to stay by our airline (probably out of business since) cause they overbooked a flight by like 70 people. i dont know how you could possibly do that that badly? but i was like 5 so i dont remember too much except the hotel we stayed at had video games in the room and we couldnt see any games cause it was during the week, no falcons, the hawks were on the road, and it was december so unless the braves just call teams up and ask to play games around christmas time, i dont think that was gonna happen.

but yea, thats cool. i wished i lived there cause its alot warmer there than here and new hampshire where i go to school...but i do love the airport there. easily best airport in the country. its like a mall...now i finally actually want like a 5 hr layover when i travel down to florida

but on a different note...what happened to your thrashers this year? they were so good 2 yrs ago, winning that division. and now theyre just trading away hossa? i guess the draft could look good but it looks to me like theyre not gonna do much next year either

Joneli-
Hardly anyone is actually "from" Atlanta anymore. They're all transplants from colder cities. Maybe it'll help build the hockey fan base.

The Thrashers lost too much on defense last offseason and Hossa is unrestricted this year. He didn't like the direction the team was headed, so opted not to re-sign before the trade deadline. Tickets were raised for 08-09, so I'm not renewing. At least I got to see the All-Star Game, that was the highlight of the year.

EVERYONE-
I haven't yet had a chance to start writing about the Shelley game, but I will soon...

ROCK PILE RANTER-
Thanks!

FATHER PUCK-
In that sense, it was a bittersweet snag. (I knew the third comment was from Puck Jr. You would never use a word that MLB feels the need to bleep out.)

PUCK COLLECTOR-
I feel your pain.

GREG-
Thank ye.

LSTHRASHER04-
Yeah, Mets fans really haven't had much to say lately. And I'm aware that one idiot fan doesn't represent an entire group, but it still stinks.

DONNIEANKS-
Thank you.

AC-
Eight career homers now for Shelley.

DNESBITT14-
Cool. Good luck snagging another.

JONELI24-
Merci. Silly TV networks. If only they knew who was lurking out in the LF stands...

LSTHRASHER04 *and* JONELI24-
I appreciate the debate you guys had, and I'm really glad it ended peacefully with a truce.

JB-
Thanks! I just checked out your blog, and I totally respect your love for a team that isn't expected to win. Unfortunately (and this REALLY pisses me off), I'm not able to leave a comment for you. I tried signing out and signing back in...and still nothing. :-(

MUNKITTR-
Heh, thanks.

LEIGH-
1) Thank you. The ball, as Puck Collector said, was hit to left field.
2) No. I'm not trying to fan flames. It just upsets me that people have such hatred. In my opinion, ignoring these despicable attitudes is akin to encouraging them. I'm sorry if you don't want to read about anti-Semitism here, but that's something that will always be a sore spot for me (along with other forms of hatred), and when they arise within the context of baseball, I feel it is not only my right but also my duty to expose them here on my blog.
3) The writer contacted me randomly after having done a Google search for "superfans" or whatever and stumbling upon my blog and web site. Glad you saw the piece. Don't worry about getting a hard copy for me. If I were written into it more, then I'd want one. But this is just one little quote.

Hey Zack, long time no talk. First off, congrats on the HR ball. I've always wanted to catch one on the fly, haven't done it yet (got a David Bell homer that landed in some knook at "Dolphin" Stadium once). Next, just want to throw it out there that even though I never comment, I still read every one of your entries, and have been since you set up this blog. And I also wanted to share with you some news that about two weeks ago when I got home from college for the summer I thought I'd go see those first place Marlins with their crowds of less than 11,000, and came home with a personal best of 10 balls in one game, including the very first foul ball of the game.

Now to the juicy stuff. When I read this entry I went to YouTube to see if I could find the clip of Shelley Duncan's homerun with you being shown catching the ball, and ironically enough, with all this anti-semitism talk, dug up this video.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=2sWcLOzrfW0&feature=related

Anyways, I'm excited to read your next entry! Talk to you soon Zack.

hockeyguy: pens or red wings? i want sid to win now so i can root against him for the rest of his career.

Zack, where'd you go after the HR? I went looking for you, but you weren't there. BTW i forgot to say this to you when i left, but a said it to my dad when i called to say i was comin back up (to him in the upper deck): now that i left, a ball is gonna be hit right there. i probably would have caught it, but not getting it is better than getting kicked out of an empty spot and watching a ball land there.

Leigh: hasn't what happened to me, happened to you? i remember you saying something like that once. maybe you left on your own? idk.

oh, and zack, idk how much i spoiled it cuz you posted this almost right after, so i think most people just went straight to this.

2 last things: did you find out who had the glove trick that we saw in left?

and my dad sent in the text that said: go zack.

Puck -
Go Peguins Go! They're going to bring home the cup this year I can feel it

I just got back from philly and found out that there was no home games. Oh well. I still had a fun time though.
