Facebook

No, I still haven't joined Facebook, but it was just brought to my attention that I have a fan club on it. Check it out:

BTW, in case you're wondering, I have several reasons for not joining Facebook:

1) I don't feel the need to be on there. If any old friends (or future friends) want to get in touch, they can google me. I'm not hard to find. I have my own web site. I have this blog. I'm also on MySpace.

2) Speaking of MySpace, I was the last person to join that site, and before that I was the last person to join Friendster. I'd poured my guts into my (now-deleted) Friendster profile. I updated it constantly, and I wrote amazing testimonials for all my friends, and then one day, everyone was like, "Friendster sucks. It's all about MySpace." And I was like, "Your what?" And they were like, "MySpace, retard." And I was like, "I'm perfectly content being on Friendster, and I've spent all this time and effort maintaining my profile there, so whatever, you go have fun with your little MySpace friends." But then of course it actually became embarrassing to be on Friendster, so I had no choice but to join MySpace. Then one day, when all seemed right with the world, people started telling me, "MySpace is for losers. You gotta be on Facebook, Son," and I was like, "Ha, I'm not falling for this again." So I'm holding out. I refuse to transfer my entire e-social existence to another networking site. There's nothing wrong with MySpace. And besides, one of the coolest guys I know is still on there. Remember Brandon, the guy who helped me build the pyramid of baseballs? He's in his mid-20's (which is the coolest age to be) and lives in California (which is basically the coolest place to live) and he's the videographer for the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (which is the coolest job in the world), so yeah, if Brandon (who's so cool that he makes me feel less cool) is on MySpace, then it's good enough for me.

3) Facebook makes everything public. Anyone you're friends with, I've been told, can "write on your wall." I have a lot of different friends; some worlds were not meant to mix.

4) Facebook just seems annoying. I'm obviously not one to judge (as I've spent the bulk of my life chasing baseballs) but I really don't feel the need to have a virtual pet, nor did I ever feel the need to play Scrabulous. I refuse to play online Scrabble. I used to play, back in college--back when I was officially ranked as the 479th best player in North America--and people always accused me of cheating when I pulled out eight-letter words they'd never heard of. Then they'd either start cheating or they'd quit. No thanks. I don't need Facebook to entertain me.

5) Many of the things I get invited to are...shall we say...not really ME. I'm talking about poetry readings, art gallery openings, holiday parties, birthday parties in bars (my GOD I hate bars), housewarmings, etc. The point is, lots of invitations are now being sent exclusively through Facebook--"Didn't you get my invite? I posted the details on Facebook..."--so the fact that I'm not on there gives me a great excuse not to show up, and I *do* need an excuse since I'm terrible at saying no.

6) The Koobface virus. (I mean, the hits just keep coming.)

So, no Facebook for me.

Okay, I'm done being angry. I think I'll go draw a rainbow and adopt a bunny.

sabathia! 7 years 161 mil! if hes good for even 5 years of that ill be happy. this is nuts! the guys 300 pounds (not that i have anything against fat people) but c'mon! the contract is over when hes 36! how many guys his size have pitched til 36! and he blew out his arm w/ milwaukee. and the al lit him up! would have rather seen teixera, or k-rod for 5 yrs. this way he can replace mo, and until mo retires, he could set up to mo. i mean who can consistently hold a game in the yanks pen? damaso marte? i think not

Do yourself a favor and don't join Facebook. I'm pretty sure it's a cult... that I'm a part of. But good luck with that bunny. :-)

I love this rant about Facebook. I do have a profile on there, but I hardly ever update it. The other day, I ignored 67 group and invitation requests. Thank God for the "Ignore All" button. MySpace is just simpler and easier. Sorry for not commenting lately, retail during the holidays is a royal pain in the ****. Looking forward to April...

Hold the line Zack. I've got a Facebook page and I feel like a jerk every time I ignore another stupid request for a calendar, snowball fight, elven tribe, or whatever the flavor of the month is. Should I feel bad that I don't want to be a part of someone's ridiculous group?

I think not.

Congrats on being #6 this season for blogs. You are actually the #1 non-organization/media blogger.
Alex

Congrats Zack on being Number 6 in the Top 100 of the year! Especially in the pro blogs section that is quite an honor that so many people read you and care about what you have to say. I'd say you are definitely a celebrity at this point.

I was Number 93 on the fan blogs..... pretty good right?

congrats on being #6 zack! i'm not a big fan of facebook either.

do you know any of the people in the club?

I am Pro-Facebook. It is a heck of a lot more intuitive than Myspace is, and plus, it is really easy to keep up with friends on Facebook.

I understand people starting to recoil from social media, I just personally think in your case, Zack, you should embrace all forms of social media since you brand yourself and make income off your ballhawking abilities (Watch with Zack). Seems silly not to use the 4th most popular website in the world to promote you services.

I understand that people can google you, have your own website ect ect, but with proper profile building and marketing you can leverage a huge website to draw more readers, fans, and income.

PUCK COLLECTOR-
He might weigh 300 pounds, but he's also 6-foot-7. The Yankees aren't asking him to run marathons; they're asking him to throw a baseball, and his arm is in great shape. He didn't blow it out in Milwaukee. He just got a little tired which was the result of being a team player and going deep into games and pitching on short rest. That's not the kind of player you want on your team? Jeez, why is it that so many Yankee fans never seem satisfied? Wait, hold on, let me see if God is a free agent. (And by the way, I know a few people in the Facebook fan club.)

I LIVE FOR THIS-
Thank you for your support. :-)

BRAVES04-
No need to apologize. If everyone commented on every entry, I'd never be able to respond. Anyway, glad you liked the rant.

TXFILMMKR-
Amen!

ALEX-
Wow...cool...and thanks. I wasn't aware of the latest ranking 'til I saw this comment from you.

METSMAINMAN-
Thanks so much! Congrats on crack-a-lackin' the Top 100. That IS something.

RICKYMCENTIRE-
Thanks, dude.

SSWEENE1-
You do make a very compelling case. Hmm. Is Facebook really the No. 4 site in the world? What are the other three? Google has to be No. 1, right?

yeah but he doesnt even really want to be in NY. i think he'll opt out after 3. his era is like 8 in YS and as soon as he has a bad start the media and the fans (yes including me) will tear him to shreads. also his playoff era is really high

but hey the mets now look like real conteneders w/ putz to set up k-rod

Currently, according to Alexa.com (which is a site ranking website. It isn't the end-all-be-all but it offers a good snapshot) Facebook currently ranks Number 5, behind Yahoo, Google, Youtube and Windows live in that order (although if you want to get techinical, Google owns Youtube and Blogger (which is 9th) so they are probably first.) Facebook get more traffic than MySpace daily. Plus if you leverage Facebook apps such as RSS feeder and things like that, you can update your friends on your newest post without even having to edit your Facebook profile. A lot of popular bloggers leverage all sorts of social media sites, from Facebook to Twitter to help build their brand. You have a great thing going right now with all the television publicity, but it will die down as it invariably always does, and you will be back to building yourself the way you have been in between television stints, by interesting writing/posts and ballhawking exploits. I just personally feel that you could be ignoring a potential way to build your readership by ignoring Facebook altogether.

Facebook isn't that bad to connect with your friends, but I've been bombarded by plant requests. I don't want virtual plants!! If you use it just to connect with old friends, it's pretty cool.
http://kaybee.mlblogs.com

Plus Zack, you won't get any of those stupid invites since people select other people to invite from their friends list on apps, which starts at the top with the "A's." You're a "Z," so no one will care to scroll down all the way to check your name, if you follow. Unfortunately, I'm an A. Trust me, it will be like having your own invisibility cloak. :)

PUCK COLLECTOR-
Watch the Mets win more games than the Yankees in 09. Okay, so they might be in an easier division, but I'm just saying...wait for it.

SSWEENE1-
Damn. With all those facts-n-figures, it's sure hard to argue.

KAYBEE-
Virtual plants? Oy-yoy-yoy.

GINGERBREAD-
Hmm. Interesting. If only I could get a hold of that cloak in real life...
