The Hample Jinx

In the summer of 1993, as I was leaning over a railing at Shea and picking up a ball, Phillies reliever Mitch Williams ran over and kicked it out of my glove.

"What the heII did you do that for?!" I yelled.

"Y'already got four," he said and marched off.

Actually, I had five, but that's not the point. The point is that I had every right to grab that ball, and he robbed me for no good reason.

MitchwilliamsSo I jinxed him.

JinxNothing happened at first. In fact, he went on to save a career-high 43 games that year, and his team reached the playoffs—but I knew his time would come. After all, I'd given him the official Hample Jinx.

Sure enough, with a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the 9th inning of Game Six of the World Series, Williams gave up a three-run homer to Joe Carter. Series over. Blue Jays won. Phillies lost.

Soon after, Williams started receiving death threats (not from me) and vandals egged his home...all because of one practice ball months earlier at Shea Stadium.

I hope it was worth it, Mitch.

haha great post Zack. Very funny, the Astros are on ESPN tonight, I know you are rooting against them right now. Do they have ESPN in France?

Thanks. But no. No ESPN in my hotel room. Anyway, the game starts at 2am local time, and we're waking up early to fly to Israel. I'll have to settle for reading the box score later this morning. (It's 1:31am now.)

Thats horrible, no ESPN. How do they survive? But hows that time diffence treating you? Six hours would be too much for me.

haha great story. When are you coming back from your vacation? GO JAYS!

I don't know, maybe there is ESPN. As we were checking out of the hotel, we saw a huge shipment of flat screen TVs coming in...one for each room. The time difference is no problem. I'm staying up late just like I do in NYC. The only problem is when my parents wake up early in the morning with their "Let's go! Go! Go!" attitude.

I'm coming back on the 26th.

Guess what! There's ESPN in Jerusalem. I might have to blog about this...

great job.
